Affects of Oxidation & Roles of Antioxidants

July/5/2010
We have all heard how important the role of antioxidants are at helping to slow or reverse the anti-aging process, but new studies are coming out all of the time showing that antioxidants effect much more than was previously thought.

Common Thyroid Condition Affected by Oxidation

An Italian study released in June of this year shows a relationship between oxidative stress and increased inflammation in patients with Graves disease (hyperthyroidism) causing reduction in the physiological protective mechanisms against endothelial damage. The objective of the study was to determine a relevant biological relationship in the circulation of endothelial progenitor cells, a regenerative process within the body. The untreated Graves' patients showed a significant reduction in their antioxidant power. Once the patients were treated, these values returned to normal. This would, of course cause, one to wonder what the effect of antioxidant supplementation could do to prevent these problems of inflammation and endothelial damage.

Antioxidants Help with Addictions

The Laboratory of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology released new findings in their July journal that show chronic heroin users can benefit from an antioxidant therapy. Links had previously shown that oxidative stress in these patients can significantly impact opiate abuse. The heroin abusers were shown to have a heavier prooxidant level which was shown to make them much more likely to abuse.

The effects of heroin abuse are worse than most other 'street drugs,' as most of us are well aware. In just the short term: slowed and slurred speech, slow gait, constricted pupils, droopy eyelids, impaired night vision, vomiting, constipation. Long term: collapsed veins, infection of the heart lining and valves, abscesses, cellulites, and liver disease. Pulmonary complications, including various types of pneumonia, may result from the poor health condition of the abuser, as well as from heroin's depressing effects on respiration. And that's if you have pure heroin without any 'surprises.'

The effects of antioxidant supplementation are the reduction of damaging free radicals, which can prevent cell damage, and prevent the development of many diseases, such as cancer, heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and high cholesterol.

Getting Your Antioxidants

Whole foods and a diet filled with colorful fruits and vegetables are the best way to get the antioxidants we need. Organic blueberries are one of the most potent sources of antioxidants, but the recommendation is five servings of both fruit and vegetables, which can be difficult to reach without supplementation for those with a busy schedule.

Food sources are best, but if you need to supplement, we recommend using a natural supplment that is made from only the best, organically-sourced products available. Some of the ones we use and recommend are:

Active Greens

Active Greens contain phytonutrients, one of the most potent forms of antioxidant, as well as many other highly beneficial ingredients. Active Greens are available inbars (protein, chocolate coconut, and dark chocolate),powder or capsules from $35.00.

Advanced Omega 3

Advanced Omega 3 is a cold-processed, ultra-pure Norwegian Omega-3 oil. Each 2-teaspoon dose has the necessary therapeutic strength (over 4000 mg) of Omegas, as well as a smooth, great lemon taste. Advanced Omega 3 is available in a2 ounce bottle for $9.95 or a10 ounce bottle for $39.95.

Antioxidant

Antioxidant is an easy-to-use oral spray that works quickly to minimize free radical damage and degeneration. This antioxidant formula strengthens blood vessels, restores lost capillary activity, repairs and protects damaged collagen. Restores elasticity to smooth skin and minimize wrinkles. Antioxidant is just $24.95 per bottle (4-6 weeks supply).view
